Triathlons Done

Wed Jul 1, 2009, 6:24 PM
Well, I successfully completed two triathlons in the past two weeks as well as moving the day before the first one (something I would NEVER recommend.) The first triathlon was a sprint triathlon. In a sprint triathlon you swim 750 meters, bike 12.4 miles (20k) and run 3.1 miles (5k). I was very happy with how I did for my first triathlon. I finished in 1 hour 34 minutes.

The second triathlon was the Hy-Vee triathlon in Des Moines, IA and it is an Olympic Length triathlon. You double the distances of a sprint tri for an Olympic tri meaning swim 1500 meters (just under a mile), bike 24.8 miles (40k) and run 6.2 miles (10k). This one did not go as smoothly. I was close to panic by the end of the swim because I was getting tired and I just wanted to touch solid ground. Being so tired only meant bad things for the rest of the race. The bike portion was not as bad as it could have been but since I was using a hybrid bike instead of a road bike I was about the slowest person on the course and I was using more energy than almost anyone else on the course...GREAT! Then came the absolutely dreadful run portion. After only about 100 meters of running, my quads started to lock up and continued to cramp for the entire 6.2 miles. I would run 200 meters and then walk 200 meters. Needless to say, I finished the triathlon in 3 hours 31 minutes but overall I was still happy. I mean come on, how many people do you know that have completed a triathlon, let alone using a crappy hybrid bike.

I will probably look into getting a better bike and then trying the whole thing over again just to see how much better I can get my times. We'll see. Anyway, it's done and I can finally relax.
